Since you are a professional making money off photography then I suggest these if you want to get good bang for the buck. I personally wouldn't buy the smaller M1 iMac at the moment - it's been around for a long time, and it's likely there will be an M2 version fairly soon. The Studio Display is expensive, and basically the same panel as in the old 27" iMacs, but it is excellent, but there are other, cheaper options out there - especially if you don't want or need a "retina" display. If the M2 Pro Mac Mini had been an option when I was looking to upgrade, I might well have gone for that. I was able to get rid of a USB hub and a lot of wires. One other benefit of the Mac Studio is that it has lots of ports - including an SD card reader on the front (wonderful!). I have Lightroom Classic open most of the time, and it's using about 16GB of RAM, so I would second going for the highest amount of RAM available. I used to hit stack and go and make a cup of tea, now I hardly have time to fill the kettle. All the cores spin up, but the job is finished in seconds as opposed to minutes on my old i7 iMac. It will also have a long life - I generally keep things running for 4-5 years, and by getting a faster model now I buy a certain amount of future proofing.Ībout the only time this machine looks stressed is doing focus stacking in Photoshop. It was a lot of money for a non/semi pro, but what can I say, I like nice things.
My Mac Studio has the M1 Max with 32 GB of RAM. I took a deep breath, and bought the combo.

I was looking to upgrade an older Intel small iMac to a 27" with Apple Silicon - but Apple decided to kill the 27"completely and instead introduced the Mac Studio and Studio Display.
Photoshop and Lightroom are memory hogs on M1/M2 machines Whatever you get, I suggest one preferably with 32GB RAM for a "pro" machine. There are actually quite a lot of choices, so depends on your preferences.
(You should select one of the higher end configurations).įor a "pro" machine I would not get the 4.5k iMac now, as it only has the M1 processor with max 16GB RAM, and is expected to be upgraded to a more powerful processor (exactly what is speculation) later this year (exactly when is debatable).Īnother choice is one of the new MacBook Pros, which are pretty powerful and capable machines (I have one), hooked to an Apple Studio Monitor (or other monitor). However you can get some really good deals on the Apple refurb store just don't expect it to be supported by Apple as long as the new M1/M2 Apple Silicon machines. I use a 2020 5k iMac for photo-editing which I got 2.5 years ago, but this is an Intel machine which is on its way out.
